Lake County’s Powers Revoked LUMSDEN-QUEENSTOWN ROAD The No. 16 District Highways Council advised the Lake County Council at its meeting that by resolution the Main Highways Board revoked the delegation of any of its powers to the Lake County Council for the Lake County section of the LumsdenQueenstown, via Kingston, main highway. There were present:—Mr L. Lee (chairman) and Crs Aubrey, D. H. .Cockbum, G. Reid, W. S. Reid and W. Gordon. The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board advised that the application for a bridge loan of £5OOO would be submitted to the board for consideration at an early date. It was decided that if the Loans Board gave approval public meetings would be called in various parts of the county and the necessary poll would be taken in conjunction with the May elections. The Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs forwarded an extract from the New Zealand Gazette containing an Order-in-Council dealing with the preparation of an extra urban town-planning scheme for the township of Pembroke. He also advised that the necessary surveys and . other work incidental to the preparation of the scheme were being put in hand immediately. The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote asking the council if it could arrange, to have two representatives at a meeting of the Otago Provincial Centennial Council, which was to be held in February. The letter was received. The New Zealand Forestry League (Incorporated) advised that the league had undertaken to compile a list as complete as possible, of all scenic areas throughout the Dominion that were not publicly owned or controlled, the object being that over a period of years soma steps might be taken to endeavour to ensure that such areas might be permanently preserved either by the persuasion of the owner or by purchase by the State or privately-owned subscribed funds or partly by both means and asking the council’s assistance. The letter was referred to the clerk and Mr Powell to report to the league. The secretary of the Kingston Cemetery Trust asked if the council could see its way cleat to grade and gravel a road from the Kingston-Queenstown road down through the cemetery reserve. It was decided that the inspector should attend to the matter. . Mr L. Groves, Routebum, advised that if the council would erect a bridge that he could use for sheep he would be willing to supply wire ropes or any planking necessary. . The letter was referred to the .inspector with power to act. Mr R. H. Bryant, Routebum, stated that as he understood the council was assisting in erecting a bridge over die Routebum he would be quite willing to assist in the building of it. It was decided that the council should approve of Mr Bryant’s action, providing that he found the extra money necessary. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relations of Mr J. J. Mcßride. A meeting of the executive of the Southland League will be held in Queenstown on Saturday, and it was decided to bring the following questions before the executive: The Glenorchy road; necessary improvements to the Kingston-Queenstown road; the rail-car service to Kingston. After some discussion the clerk was asked to report on the question of the council supplying a county camping ground at Glendhu Bay to obviate any difficulties. It was decided to buy a new grader, provided that satisfactory arrangements could be made with the Public Works Department to take over a grader after the completion of the State Highways work for that department had been completed.
