OLD MAN KILLED ON RAILWAY

RUN OVER BY SHUNTING ENGINE (United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, February 24. Shocking injuries were suffered by an old-age pensioner, Watson Mitchell, at the Stillwater railway yards about 6 o’clock this evening, death following in a few minutes. Mitchell, who was aged 80, resided in a hut across the railway yards at Stillwater and was taking a short cut across the tracks when he was run over by a shunting engine. He was believed to have been deaf, and it is thought that he did not notice the engine approaching. LITTLE GIRL FATALLY INJURED AUCKLAND, February 24. While crossing Tahuna road, opposite her home at Mangateparu, six miles from Morrinsville, on returning from school shortly after 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Phyllis Audrey Marwood, aged 5£ years, daughter of Mr and Mrs William G. Marwood, was knocked, down by a motor-car and suffered fatal injuries.

CYCLIST KILLED IN COLLISION CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. Joseph Quinn, of Loburn, was killed instantaneously, when his cycle was struck by a car driven by K. G. Webley, builder, of Kairaki, at an intersection near Kaiapoi this evening. LEG BROKEN BY KICK FROM HORSE When Verdun Afflick, aged 20, was kicked by a horse yesterday afternoon his left leg was broken below the knee. He was admitted to the Southland hospital at 5.30 o’clock, and his condition last evening was reported to be quite satisfactory.
