LOUIS BATTERS CHALLENGER
KNOCK-OUT IN WORLD TITLE BOUT MANN SUFFERS TERRIFIC PUNISHMENT (Received February 24, 8.5 pm.) 1 NEW YORK, February 23. In a contest for the heavyweight boxing championship of the world Joe Louis (14.4), the holder, knocked out Nathan Mann (13.11 J in the third round of a 15-round bout at Madison Square Garden. Louis was cautious in the first round but in the second he opened up. He swarmed all over Mann, a right to the head flooring Mann for a count of nine. Louis was beating Mann unmercifully at the bell.
Mann suffered terrific punishment in the third round. He was down for a count of three. Louis continued a savage attack on his helpless opponent, finally flooring him with a right to the jaw. The attendance was approximately 20,000, most of whom cheered Mann. Boxing critics described the contest as the most savage two-fisted onslaught in history. Mann tried desperately to make a good fight of it. but pitifully lacked the power to halt the champion’s smashing attack.
