ANGLO-IRISH TALKS RESUMED
NEGOTIATION OF TRADE PACT (British Official Wireless) (Received February 24, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, February 23. The President of the Executive Council of Eire (Mr Eamon de Valera) had an hour’s conversation with the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) at the House of Commons, and afterwards the first formal meeting of the resumed discussions between Ministers of the United Kingdom and Eire took place. Mr Chamberlain, the Home Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare), the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence (Sir Thomas Inskip) and the Secretary for the Dominions (Mr Malcolm MacDonald) were present. The discussions ranged over a wide field and embraced questions of partition, defence, finance and trade. Later the discussion on trade, with a view to the conclusion of a trade agreement, was resumed between the Minister of Industry (Mr Sean Lemass) and the Minister of Agriculture (Mr James Ryan), for Eire, and the Minister of Agriculture (Mr W. S. Morrison) and Mr MacDonald, for the United Kingdom.
