SCHOOL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
NEW ESTABLISHMENT AT VICTORIA COLLEGE
(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, February 23. A school of public administration, stated to be the first” of its kind, will shortly be created at Victoria University College. For spme time Victoria College, as the university college situated in the capital city, where the bulk of the Civil Service is employed, has had ambitions towards developing something of the kind. But various things have conspired to prevent the creation of the school. For a time there was a similar course available at Auckland University College. This, which lasted about five years, is understood to have come to an end in 1936. Arranged by Professor H. Belshaw, of the School of Economics, it gave particular attention to local body needs and the Auckland City Council voted about £250 a year for five years to aid its work. The diploma issued by the college for the students who were successful in examinations after taking the Auckland course was, however, a purely Auckland diploma. The , new diploma will be from the University of New Zealand and the course of studies will be of a more academic nature. Up to the present Victoria University College has been doing the preparatory work on the plan of starting the school and the first step has been to gain acceptance by other colleges of the principle that there should be a, school and that it should be at Victoria College. This has already been done, and the next step will be to have the College Council decide to make application to the University of New Zealand for authority to establish a school. ~“ IS move can be made at any monthly meeting of the university governing authority.
