RHEUMATISM COSTLY TO INDUSTRY
DANGER TO LIFE PROVED BY STATISTICS
LONDON, February 17.
The high cost of rheumatism was emphasized by Lord Horder, Physician to the King, in appealing to the Parliamentary Medical Committee for support for the work of the Empire Rheumatism Council. “This scourge costs the nation several million days’ incapacity of workers a year and £17,000,000 in sick pay and wages paid out by approved societies alone,” said Lord Horder. “I am credibly informed that there is as much rheumatism per thousand in Australia as in Great Britain, so that if climate is the vital factor there must be other effects operating in Australia.” Sir Frank Fox said that he had been informed that statistically rheumatism caused more illness and more loss than cancer and tuberculosis.
