MEDICAL AFFAIRS IN PROVINCE

SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL BOARD MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS Reports from medical superintendents and matrons in the Southland Hospital Board’s district were received at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. There were present: —Mr T. Golden (chairman), Miss H. L. Birss, Mrs A. Henderson, Messrs W. Clark, J. S..A. McDougall, A. McKenzie, J. W. Miller, John Miller, W. Norman, E. B. Patrick, J. H. Smith, F. Trapski and Dr J. A. Pottinger. The medical superintendent at the Southland Hospital (Dr L. C. McNickle) reported that 93 patients remained in the hospital at December 31 and 261 were admitted during January. A total of 227 was discharged and 10 patients died during the month. At January 31, 117 patients remained in the hospital. The total number of patients treated was 354, the average number of patients a day was 114, and the individual days stay was 9.98. The medical superintendent at the Gore Hospital (Dr J. E. Rogers) reported that 24 patients remained in the hospital at January 1, and 79 were admitted during the month, making a total under treatment of 103. Seventyfour patients were discharged and four died during January, and at February 1, 25 patients remained in the hospital. There were 43 operations and 83 outpatient attendances during the month.

The matron at the Gore Hospital (Miss V. A. Fox) acknowledged the following donations for the month: — Mrs W. Baker, books; Mrs Copeland, flowers; Mrs Hall, flowers; Mr Cox, fruit; Mrs T. Gerken, flowers and books; Edna Gourley, school journals..

The medical superintendent at the Lake County Hospital (Dr W. A. Anderson) reported that eight patients remained in the hospital at January 1 and 11 were admitted during the month, making a total under treatment of 19. Nine patients were discharged and one died during January. There were four operations and two out-patient attendances during the month. The matron at the Invercargill Infirmary (Miss C. M. Fitzgibbon) reported that 54 men and 35 women remained in the infirmary at January 1 and 22 men and eight women were admitted during the month, making a total of 119 patients under treatment. Four men and five women were discharged and three men and one woman died during the month. At February 1, 69 men and 37 women remained in the infirmary.
