CROQUET
GOLD MALLET WON BY J. NICHOL
The weather was fine and warm when the croquet matches for the gold and silver mallets were concluded yesterday. Following are the results:— Mrs Robertson (Northend) 26 beat Mrs Metcalf (Logan Park) 3; Mrs J. T. Wilson (Northend) 26 beat Mrs S. Smith (Northend) 7; Mrs Sargisson (Ngaroma) 26 beat Mrs Bryant (Manakau) 5; Mrs Millin (Opoho) 26 beat Mrs Metcalf (Logan Park) 11; Mrs Wilson 26 beat Mrs Robertson 23.
Mrs Wilson and J. Nichol played consistently well throughout the mallets competition, both losing only one match. Mrs Wilson lost to Mrs Metcalf (Logan Park) by six points, and Nicol lost to Mrs Wilson by two points. These two played off for winner and runnerup. At first there was considerable in and out play. When Mrs Wilson had both balls well round she went boundary, giving Nicol a chance to make an all-round break. The end of the game was interesting as each player was set for a finish more than once when the other hit in a good long shot. Nichol finally won a close and interesting game by 26 points to 23. Nichol wins the gold mallet brooch presented by the New Zealand Croquet Council and Mrs Wilson as runner-up wins the silver mallet.
