FLOOR SPACE IN NEW SCHOOL ROOMS
AUCKLAND EDUCATION BOARD URGES OTHER WORKS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 16. Feelings of indignation and regret were expressed by members of the Auckland Education Board this morning when instructions were received from the Education Department setting out the’decision to provide additional floor space in new class-rooms. It was presumed that the decision was part of a suggested move towards providing 20 square feet of space for each child, a figure which one member described as extreme. Members considered if there was money available more pressing needs should first be filled. The suggestions
included the provision of country teachers’ houses, replacement of halls used as schools, expansion of country schools and provision of assembly halls and swimming baths. It was left to the chairman (Mr T. U. Wells) and the secretary to communicate to the department what suggestions they thought fit.
