AIRPORT FOR CITY OF AUCKLAND
TWO AREAS SUGGESTED BY COMMITTEE (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 16. Two areas as possible sites for the development of an air port to serve the city of Auckland are suggested by the special committee of investigation which was set up by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) towards the end of last year at the request of the Auckland City Council. The committee appointed by the Minister consisted of Mr J. Wood, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department as chairman, the Chief of Staff, GroupCaptain the Hon. R. A. Cochrane, and the Director of Civil Aviation, Group Captain T. M. Wilkes. The committee made recommendations on two areas and gave tentative estimates of the cost of development. One of these sites was an area on the southern shore of the upper reaches of Manukau Harbour. Here it was proposed that an area of 415 acres should be reclaimed by the construction of a ring embankment, the cost, with the development of the landing field, being estimated at £164,000. The other proposal contemplated the reclamation in the same manner of an area of 509 acres between the Point Chevalier peninsula and Heme Bay. This scheme involved an initial outlay of £129,000.
