NIGHTCAPS

There was a big attendance of parents at the break-up ceremony of the Nightcaps District High School. The head master (Mr O. V. Berry) said the abolition of the proficiency examination had allowed teachers to develop individuality in pupils and less time was spent on formal subjects, allowing more time for arts and crafts and club work.

Mr W. Excell, chairman of the School Committee, and a member of the Southland Education Board, addressed the parents and pupils. It was pleasing to see so many parents present, said Mr Excell, and this interest was most gratifying to school committees and education boards. Nightcaps was becoming quite an educational centre. The new high school would be ready for the new year, and additional facilities in a manual training centre, a dental clinic and a new infant room would, in all probability, be provided in the near future. Miss V. McKenzie and Messrs A. N. Murray and J. A. McPherson, who have been transferred, were given presentations from the committee, teachers and pupils. The following prizes were presented: Cup, presented by Mr Ducan, with medal for the pupil in the secondary department showing most all-round progress.—Walter McCoy, Form 4.
