RIVERTON

DRAFTING OF PLANS FOR DAM ENGINEER ENGAGED ON WORK The engineer (Mr G. B. Barnes) advised the Riverton Borough Council at its monthly meeting that he was engaged in drafting plans for the dam and would send copies to the council without delay. It was stated that the capacity of the reservoir would be considerably increased, possibly to 750,000 gallons, and the catchment area would be working to a much larger extent than originally planned. There were present:—The Mayor (Dr N. G. Trotter) and Crs J. A. Martin, H. E. Philp, J. Crawford, T. E. Dyke, A. T. Hogg and J. A. B. Walker. The town clerk of Invercargill (Mr W. F. Sturman) wrote advising that bunting could be hired at the following rates: National flags 2/- each; streamer flags, 5/- a dozen a week or part of a week. It was decided to accept the quote and use the flags for decorating the front portion of the Council Chambers during the centenary celebrations. The Secretary of the Health Camp Association wrote advising that the central council had practically decided to build the permanent health camp on a site offered in Central Otago. The letter thanked the borough for its offer of a site for a health camp at the Pilot Reserve, South Riverton. 0 The engineer of the Wallace County Council (Mr J. G. C. Baker) wrote stating that the Public Works Department had returned the specifications for bituminizing the road at the northern end of Palmerston street and Downing street for alteration.

Several councillors expressed displeasure at the delay of this work. It was stated that it had been decided to proceed with the bituminizing of this portion of the highway early next month and it was decided to urge the completion of the specifications and call for tenders immediately they came to hand. The borough traffic inspector (Mr A E. Thomas) wrote advising that a number of motor-vehicles had parked in a dangerous position at the south end of the Aparima traffic bridge. Motordrivers had adopted a habit of stopping their cars nearby while swimming races were in progress and had caused considerable concern to passing motorists. He recommended that signs should be posted prohibiting the parking of motorvehicles in this locality. It was decided to approve the recommendation. The directorate of the Riverton Centenary Celebrations requested that the lights be kept burning for a longer period during the festivities. It was decided to accede to the request.

Mr W. Ashley, a former member of the council, wrote expressing thanks to the Mayor and councillors for the excellent work carried out by the Borough Council during the past year and extended seasonal greetings to the council. The Property Committee was authorized to repair the parapet of the Council Chambers.

Cr A. T. Hogg, in referring to the improvements to the Bay road, stated that there was too much loose gravel on this portion of roadway and suggested improvements which would eliminate the danger to motorists.

The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee.

Seasonal greetings were exchanged at the end of the meeting.
