MOTOR-CYCLE RIDDEN WITHOUT LICENCE
CONVICTION AGAINST YOUTH (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. “It is a question whether I should not treat this case as contempt of Court and impose a term of imprisonment,” declared Mr E. C. Lewy, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today during the hearing of a case in which a youth, Stanley Arthur Dumpleton, was charged with riding a motor-cycle on December 19 without being the holder of a driver’-s licence.
The inspector of the Transport Department (Mr Wilson), who prosecuted, said Dumpleton had his' licence concelled for two years only a week ago when he was convicted for a driving offence. On Sunday last the inspector saw him again riding a motorcycle along the main North Road. “It is a great pity you have not the power to confiscate this man’s machine,” said the inspector, who added he had. had a long talk with Dumpleton, who agreed to allow him to sell the cycle. “I am tempted to give you what you deserve, young man,” declared Mr Lewy. “If you think you or others can defy the Court’s orders you had better learn otherwise. I will give you a further opportunity, but there will be no option or further suspension if there is any repetition of this sort of thing.” Defendent was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon.
