After a halt because of snowstorms the fighting on the Teruel front has been resumed, says the Madrid correspondent of the British United Press. Loyalist planes dropped a second ultimatum at Teruel, warning the occupants to surrender and threatening them with utter destruction if they did not.
After the fall of Puerto de Escandon, which protected Teruel’s eastern side, loyalist artillery subjected the town to a terrific bombardment 1 The scene, under blinding searchlights, resembled the shooting of a monstrous film.
The defenders made a desperate counter-attack on the north, west and south sides but failed to break the loyalists’ stranglehold.
GIBRALTAR FRONTIER REOPENED STEAMER SERVICE TO ALGECIRAS RESUMED (Received December 21, 7.55 p.m.) LONDON, December 21. The Gibraltar correspondent of The Times says that the Spanish frontier has been reopened and the steamer service to Algeciras has been resumed. WARNING TO MARINERS MISAPPREHENDED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, December 20.. The Admiralty states that some misapprehension has been caused by a statement in a notice to mariners that mining in Spanish waters has been intensified. This statement formed part of a comprehensive notice which has been issued from time to time.
