SUGAR SHORTAGE IN CITY
Relief Shipment Is Due Today
DISORGANIZED SERVICE FROM AUCKLAND
The acute shortage of sugar which has been experienced in Invercargill during the last few days will be relieved with the arrival of the Waiana at Bluff today. The shortage, according to an Invercargill merchant, was caused by a lack of shipping facilities, the regular service having been withdrawn without notice. There had been no alteration in the price. . . The manager of the shipping company concerned explained last night that there were previously two vessels, the Waimarino and the Waiana, on the run to Bluff. As a result of a delay because of unfavourable weather one arrived at Bluff soon after the other and the first reached Auckland again only three days ahead of the second. company then had to rearrange the time table and the run to Bluff was left to the Waiana, the Waimarino proceeding only as far as Dunedin. Unfortunately for merchants in Invercargill the Waiana was one of the vessels held up during the recent waterfront dispute at Auckland, but the Waimarino got away before the trouble started. The Waiana had also been delayed at Lyttelton on the present trip on account of wet weather.
