BUST OF BISHOP TO BE INSTALLED
CATHOLIC CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS (Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, December 21. A feature of the New Zealand Catholic centennial celebrations, which will be opened in Auckland on February 26, will be the installation in St. Patrick’s Cathedral of a life-size bronze bust of Bishop Pompallier, the first Catholic bishop in the Dominion and the central figure of New Zealand Catholic history. The bust, which arrived from England last week, is the work of an Auckland sculptor, Mr William Wright, A.R.C.A., instructor in modelling at the Elam School of Art, and is at present on display at the Auckland Art Gallery. Mr Wright began the work early in the yea- at the request of Bishop Liston, of Auckland, and the plaster model was sent to England a few months ago to be cast in bronze. Bishop Pompallier is depicted in his episcopal attire with mantelleta, stole, skull-cap and pectoral cross. The insignia of a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cross of the Legion of Honour are also shown. •
