SEAWARD DOWNS

There was a big attendance of parents at the break-up ceremony of the Seaward Downs school. Several items were given by the school pupils, the musical items being accompanied by Merle Bryant, a pupil. Algie Swain gave two mouth-organ solos. Mrs McCorkindale, president of the Seaward Downs branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union presented prizes to the winners of the calf club competition. She said the division had given the prizes to give an incentive to the boys and girls to take an active interest in calves so that when they became farmers they would know the best stock.

In the British and Colonial Industries writing competition Annie Macdonald, Merle Bryant and May Ritchie gained prizes. Certificates won in the district school sports were also presented. MATAURA ISLAND At the annual break-up of the Mataura Island school Mr A. Simpson, chairman of the school committee, presided. A short programme was presented by the pupils before the prizes were distributed. Mr Simpson thanked Mr and Mrs Currie for their work during the year and congratulated the children on the programme.
