WYNDHAM

REDEMPTION LOAN SALE OF DEBENTURES Correspondence from the Treasury Department about the raising of the Public Works. redemption loan was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Wyndham Town Board. There were present: The chairman (Commissioner H. Hunter) and Commissioners W. Richardson, F. Ball, W. H. Johnstone and L. Harper. The chairman said that as late as a week before the old loan was due there had been very few applications for debentures in the new loan. Therefore, to make the investment appear a little more attractive, the clerk J had applied to the authorities in Wellington for permission to raise the rate of interest by one-quarter per cent. The request bad been refused, and then it had been decided to place the sale of the debentures in the hands of an Invercargill brokerage firm. There were now only eight of the 42 debentures not sold, and it was expected to sell them before the end of the week.

The action of the chairman and the town clerk was approved. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote inquiring if the board would be prepared to act as the licensing authority for motor transport vehicles requiring permits to travel over routes other than those specified in their licences.

It was decided to comply with the request.

The District Highways Council, Invercargill, wrote advising that the Main Highways Board had approved of the following estimates for highways under the Town Board’s control:— Mataura-Wyndham—Letter-box highway, maintenance, £B5 (£3 for £1); Mataura-Wyndham—Letter-box main highway, two-coat sealings, £344 (£3 for £1). It was decided to nominate Mr A. T. Newman, the sitting member, for a seat on the new Southland and Wallace and Fiord Hospital Board. Mr T. Broom wrote tendering his resignation as surfaceman to the board. It was decided to apply to the Post and Telegraph Department for the installation of a night telephone. The town clerk (Mr F. J. Bogue) was appointed town valuer. W. 11. Nutsford was appointed the board’s ranger under the Impounding Act and also inspector of noxious weeds, the following being declared to be noxious weeds: Gorse, broom, hemlock (wild carrot), elderberry, ragwort, docks and foxglove. It was decided to mow the long grass on side streets in the town.

A long discussion took place on the state of the footpaths and roads within the town boundary. It was decided to continue tar-sealing work. Cr Johnstone complained about the coarse sand being used on the footpaths. Cr Richardson declared that too much gravel had been placed on street corners. Some of it should be raked off, he said. “Enough gravel has been put on the streets for two years,” said Cr Johnstone. “Redan street is two feet high in the centre, and some of the streets are a disgrace to humanity.” Cr Ball: Cr Johnstone has been asking for gravel along his road for years and now that he has it, he’s complaining.” CRICKET MATCH The Wyndham junior men’s cricket team played a match against a team chosen from members of the tennis club. Because of the failure of the light, stumps had to be drawn before the match was finished. The tennis players made 111 runs (four retired), and the cricketers had made 97 for seven wickets at stumps. Top-scorers were C. W. Rout (33, retired) for the tennis club, and J. R. Marshall (28) for the cricketers. — Details:— TENNIS PLAYERS G. Burgess run out 15 E. Pankhurst b S. McKay 0 E. S.
