“LEARN TO SWIM” WEEK

EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE OF SCHOOL PUPILS The attendance at the Municipal Baths yesterday for the fifth day of the “Learn to Swim” week was not as large as was expected probably because many were busy with their shopping for the week-end. However, 680 persons attended the various sessions. The total attendance for the five days is well ahead of that recorded for any previous “learn to swim” drive conducted locally and those in charge of the arrangements are more than satisfied with the results of their work. The attendance of primary school pupils during the five days has been excellent. Indeed, so crowded have some of the sessions been that two schools will have to complete their instruction next week.

The baths staff will be very busy again next week when further instruction will be given school pupils, a programme will be held for sea scouts and the Southland Technical College will hold its annual sports, girls and boys on separate days. The 33 1-3 yards dash handicap held last evening resulted:—First heat: H. Bath 1, B. Hannon 2, Miss L. Gellatly 3. Second heat: Miss M. Kennedy 1, A. Inglis 2, P. Malthus 3. Final: Bath 1, Miss M. Kennedy 2, Miss L. Gellatly 3, Hannon 4.

The leaders in the aggregate competition are as follows: A. Wilson 30 points, A. Brown 26, V. Osmond 23, C. Martin 20, Miss L. Gellatly 18, A. Inglis 17. The competition finishes tonight with a 50 yards dash handicap.
