GORE T.C.

FIELDS FOR BOXING DAY HANDICAPS DECLARED The Gore Trotting Club’s handicaps for the meeting on Boxing Day are as follows:— CROYDON HANDICAP, £145. One mile and a-half.

MARE’S GOOD RECORD AS PRODUCER

FOUR WINNERS FROM FIRST WATER The recent success of Aqua Bond marked the fourth winner to the credit of the Harold Rothschild mare First Water, whose earlier winners were Rocks Ahead, Oasis and Nell Grattan. First Water has proved an excellent producer for Mr H. Hunter, of Wyndham, and while Rocks Ahead has been by far the best of her produce Aqua Bond promises to win her way to good company.

There may be some significance in the fact that Happy Voyage, the sire of Rocks Ahead, may not appeal to breeders to the same extent as Worthy Bond, Grattan Loyal and Adioo Guy, the respective sires of Aqua Bond, Nell Grattan and Oasis. Happy Voyage, an Australian-bred horse, has sired a number of fine winners with limited opportunities, and he held a mile record of 2.4 1-5. Happy Voyage died in Southland a couple of seasonq ago. Worthy Bond is the only son of Axworthy to be brought out to New Zealand and in the Eastern District he has been well patronized. Grattan Loyal is a young sire whose stock have won a number of races in recent seasons while Adioo Guy (now dead) sired Grand Mogul, Southern Smile, Aide de Camp and others, as well as a twominute winner in the United States. First Water’s first effort at the stud was First Author, a filly by Author Dillon which did not race but has been breed from in recent seasons. Her other four progeny to race have all been returned winners. First Water, who was bred at the Stevenson and McMath stud at Riversdale, had a twomile record of 4min 35 2-ssec. She was by Harold Rothschild (son of Rothschild) from Red Diamond, a Prince Imperial mare. First Water’s record is certainly a good one.

SCHMELING’S BOUT WITH THOMAS

NEW YORK, December 8.

Reports from the training camps of Max Schmeling and Harry Thomas indicate that both are fit for their 15round bout on Monday. Jack Johnson predicted that Thomas will make it “plenty tough” for Schmeling. Gene Tunney said: “Schmeling could knock out Joe Louis again tomorrow. His 18 months’ rest has not detracted one iota from his ring efficiency.”
