PROFESSIONAL GOLF

TOURNAMENT AT OTATARA IN FEBRUARY The first big golf tournament to be held in Southland will take place in February on the Invercargill Golf Club’s course at Otatara, and it is expected that professionals from all over New Zealand will enter for it. The council of the New Zealand Golf Association at its meeting this week decided to grant the Professional Golfers’ Association £lOO towards the prize money for the tournament, and as the committee of the Invercargill Club does not expect any difficulty in raising, the balance of the money required, preliminary arrangements are being put in hand immediately. The tournament will be held either on February 18, 19 and 20 or a week later. The first day will be devoted to matches of some kind, and the real business of the tournament will begin on the morning of the second day, when the first four rounds of stroke play will take place. The second round will be played in the afternoon and the third and fourth rounds the following day. When the proposal to hold the tournament at Otatara was mentioned to

prominent professionals at the New Zealand championships by B. J. Smith, jun., it was warmly commended, and among those who promised to enter were E. S. Douglas, the present professional champion, A. Murray, who was disqualified after finishing first in this year’s open championship, A. J. Shaw, E. J. Moss and J. A. Clements, former open champions, C. C. Clements, professional champion last year, and, with B. J. Smith, jun., winner of the professional foursomes this year, H. R. Blair and J. D. Mclntosh.
