GERMAN CHURCHES MAY LOSE PROPERTY
EXPROPRIATION BY STATE FORESHADOWED
BERLIN, December 8.
The forthcoming expropriation of Church property by the State is clearly foreshadowed in Schwartzkorps, the official organ of the Hitler Guards, which says: “Landed properties of the churches have been estimated to comprise 7 per cent, of the total area of Germany.” The paper suggests that the churches’ subsidies should be cut off on the ground that the State no longer receives from them the same moral support as in the past, but on the contrary must expend considerable means and strength to counteract the churches’ anti-State efforts.
The article concludes: “One day we will no longer be able to escape the painful task of deciding to which the so-called church properties rightly belong.”
