GAS MAKES MENAGERIE A LETHAL CHAMBER
64 ANIMALS AND BIRDS KILLED (Received December 9, 8.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 9. Seeping gas from a heater killed 64 monkeys, birds, ant-eaters, alligators, tiger cats, deer and other animals in the menagerie of an animal importing warehouse. A policeman who smelt the gas summoned rescuers, who revived four alligators, an emu, an ant-eater, an ape, two monkeys and three red doves. Thousands of tropical fish were not affected, several of the large tanks being equipped with compressed air tubes designed to keep the oxygen content of the water normal. The gas was thus unable to penetrate.
