OTAUTAU

OFFICIAL OPENING OF SWIMMING BATHS SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONS TAKE PART The official opening of the Otautau public baths was held in fine weather. There was a big attendance, including several Southland champions and re-cord-holders from Invercargill. Mr R. Stewart was president. Mr A. A. Liddell, chairman of the Town Board, performed the opening ceremony. Mr Liddell said that the suggestion to build the baths had first come from Mr J. Thomson, who had been mainly responsible for their erection. Credit was also due to the builders. Mr Liddell took the first dive. Mr H. W. Ashley, president of the Southland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, returned thanks for the invitation to be present, and extended an invitation to all to be present in Invercargill during the “Learn to Swim” Week. The club was affiliated with the centre, and its members were entitled to compete in the championships, provided they could come up to the required standard. If at any time the Otautau Club was holding a carnival he would be only too pleased to assist in any way..
