BRITISH RETAIL SALES REACH RECORD

GREAT INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY IN SCOTLAND RUGBY, November 29. Viscount Home, speaking at Edinburgh about the industrial outlook, said the result of the recent increase in wages naturally meant increased spending power. The sales in retail shops had reached a record and the great staple industries were experiencing a very considerable advance. About 50 new factories had been established in Scotland during the past two or three years. The programme of rearmament had had a considerable effect, but it had not yet got into its stride. Industry had benefited more from bettering tendencies in the world during the past two years than from the programme of rearmament. Referring to the policy of postponing expenditure where possible for a period when industry was less active generally, Lord Horne said the Great Western Railway Company, of which he was chairman, had adopted this course in the expenditure of millions of pounds. He saw no reason to believe that the peak of industrial activity in Scotland had been reached.
