Fruit Cases For Nelson

A consignment of 80,000 fruit cases, supplied by Southland saw millers, has left Bluff by the Kaimai and the Karepo for the Nelson district, where there has been a shortage of suitable box timber. This is the biggest order for fruit boxes that has ever left Bluff, but it is not regarded as an indication that such orders will continue, as the shortage in Nelson is only a temporary one. Matured plantations in the Nelson province have been cut out, but it is stated that within a short time there will be a surplus and the prospects of further business on this scale coming to Southland from Nelson are considered remote. Aeronautical Equipment • As the result of suggestions made by the Southland Aero Club to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) the Southland Technical College has received new equipment in the form of an R.A.F. aeroplane engine, a 12cylinder Rolls-Royce. A complete tool kit has also been sent with the engine. The college’s engineering equipment is extensive and valuable and the latest addition will be of much practical help to the students of the recently-formed classes in aeronautics. Only one other college in the Dominion, it is understood, is at present attempting such instruction. New Motor-Mower A new water-cooled 11 horse-power motor-mower has been imported by the reserves department of the City Council, and was used in Queen’s Park for the first time yesterday. The machine, which has a 42-inch cut, is the largest one of its kind in the South Island, and there are only a few others as big in the North Island. A mower with a 36-inch cut is operating on the Carisbrook ground, Dunedin. Warm Weather Office coats were shed, cardigans cast aside, and shirts opened at the neck by perspiring workers in the city yesterday. 171030 more fortunate spent a certain amount of the working day in -milk-bars and soft-drink shops while the others toiled on, thinking longingly of the beach or a shady tree. In the evening there was almost a procession of cars to the beach and only the most energetic decided* that it was worth while following a golf ball or wielding a tennis racket. Yesterday was the hottest day this summer, the temperature rising to over 75 degrees Fahrenheit. On Tuesday, November 30, the temperature -was over 74 degrees.

Tourists Attracted by Pictures The screening of pictures of Stewart Island in Minneapolis by Mr G. M. Turner while in the United States recently was the direct cause of Mr and Mrs Johnston of that city coming so far south while on a tour of New Zealand. Mr Turner has screened his pictures of Stewart Island in many cities and countries and he has been a voluntary publicity officer for the island for many years.
