It is not likely that any factories in Invercargill will close down within a fortnight of Christmas or Boxing Day—the time stipulated under the Factories Act—to avoid extra payment to workers for the holiday, which this yeai' falls on a Sunday. Saw mills are the factories that are most affected in Southland, and although there has been a slack time in some lines of the timber industry there has been, and still is, a big demand for box timber. The freezing works will open on December 13, irrespective of the extra holiday pay, and other factories will continue as usual
