Miss Evelyne Matthews, McMaster street, has returned from Dunedin, where she was the guest of Dr and Mrs Alan Sinclair for the 21st birthday of their son, George. The engagement is announced of Onawi, ~younges' daughter of Mr and Mrs R P. Ingles, Esk street, to John Clayton, only son of Mr and Mrs John Thomson, Grace street. During their tour of the Southern Lakes district the Australian ViceConsul for Holland, Mr M. F. Vigeveno, and Mrs Vigeveno were guests at the White Star Hotel, Queenstown. Miss Charlotte Petrie, Teviot street, who has been exhibiting some of her paintings at the annual exhibition of

the Dunedin Art Society, has returned home. She was accompanied by Miss Gladys Petrie. Mrs Anderson Tyrer has left for the north after a visit to Invercargill when she was a guest at the Grand Hotel. She accompanied her husband, who examined here for the Trinity College of Music, London. Miss Joan Fitchett, daughter of the Bishop of Dunedin, and Miss Marion Eveline Malcolm, daughter of the vicar of Hawera, have been awarded the

Johanna Lohse Scholarship for this year. The scholarships are of £lOO each, and the award is made by the Church Property Trustees. There were 10 applications. Miss M. Magill, a member of the Eastbourne Borough Council and a former president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, has been appointed to the National Road Safety Council. In announcing the appointment, the Hon. R. Semple said that for a long time he had thought it desirable

to have the interests of women in road safety directly represented on the council. Over 50 members of the Garden Circle of the Southland Women’s Club visited Victoria Park on Monday afternoon. A number of new members was present, and the outing was a particularly enjoyable one. Beds of roses, lupins, ranunculuses, and an exceptionally beautiful show of pansies were admired. After’ a walk round the garden and through the native bush tea was served in the dining room, hall and drawing room. The members thanked Lady Anderson for her hospitality and for giving them the opportunity of seeing her garden.

PARTY AT WINTON TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED Mr and Mrs F. Rawle, Winton, entertained their friends at a dance in the Masonic Hall, Winton, recently to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest son, Frank. Items were contributed by Miss I.
