TRAIN ACCIDENT NEAR AUCKLAND

BOARD OF INQUIRY MAKES NO STATEMENT (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 7. With the arrival of the locomotive superintendent, Mr P. R- Angus, and the transportation superintendent, Mr G. T. Wilson, from Wellington, the departmental inquiry into the head-on collision between the shunt train and the mixed passenger and goods train near the Parnell overbridge early last month was reopened at the Auckland railway station. The Board of Inquiry consists of Mr Angus, as chairman, and Messrs Wilson and P. E. Biggs, the engine drivers’ representative. The inquiry was opened at Auckland a month ago, but was adjourned until the recovery of the two shunters injured in the accident, Messrs I. Macky and F. E. H. Ongley, who were still in hospital. Both men gave evidence at today’s sitting and it is expected the inquiry will be continued tomorrow. Mr Wilson said the inquiry was purely a departmental one and that the evidence taken would be submitted to the General Manager of Railways (Mr G. H. Mackley). No statement would be issued to the Press.
