WOMAN AND CHILDREN ESCAPE FROM FIRE

MOTHER RECEIVES BURNS (United Press Association) TE KUITI, December 7. After being burned in a fire in her home at Kaeaea near Aria last night, Mrs Emily Parkes, wife of Mr P. S. Parkes, was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of the morning dangerously ill. The house caught fire last night when her husband was away and Mrs Parkes and her three children escaped in their night attire. Evidently under the impression that one of the children was still in the house Mrs Parkes rushed back into the burning dwelling, where her night clothing caught on fire. The four made their way to a neighbour’s house and Mrs Parkes was brought to the Te Kuiti hospital. There has been no change in her condition since her admission. SCHOOL TEACHER FOUND DEAD (United Press Association) HASTINGS, December 7. John Henry Francis Sugden, a school teacher of Feilding who . was spending a holiday on Mr A. Williams s station at St. Lawrence, Otane, went out shooting on Sunday and when he did not return that night a search was made and the body was found beside a fence with a discharged shotgun beside it. Sugden had received a wound in the head. WOMAN CYCLIST INJURED IN COLLISION (United Press Association) HAMILTON, December 7. Colliding with an unknown cyclist who failed to stop, Mrs Annie Proudlock, aged 63, was knocked down. She was taken to hospital last night with a fractured leg. She was cycling along Alexander street when another cyclist, emerging from an alleyway, collided with her, throwing her on the roadway.

MOTHER AND BOY INJURED IN EXPLOSION

(United Press Association) HAMILTON, December 7.

John Scurr, aged five years, was severely burned by an explosion of petrol at the Rotowaro filling station yesterday. The boy was standing near a motor-car, the tank of which was being filled, when the petrol ignited. There was an explosion and the boy received severe burns on the face, legs and body. His mother, Mrs Elsie Scurr, who was standing nearby, ran to his aid and was burned on the hands. The mother and child were taken to hospital. Mrs Scurr was discharged today, but the condition of the child is fairly serious.
