FILM VERSION OF BIBLE STORIES

Language Of Gospels

Advocated CHURCHMEN’S REPLY TO CENSORS’ INQUIRY (Urfited Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received December .7, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 6. Biblical stories in films should be told in Biblical or congruous language, according to a decision reached by the Cinema Christian Council and the Public Morality Council in reply to a questionnaire by the British Board of Film Censors. The two councils, which held a conference under the chairmanship of the Bishop of Southwark (Dr R. G. Parsons), also decided that film censors should not depart from the principle of not certifying for exhibition any representation of the figure of Christ. Some members favoured the representation of Christ in films suitable for exhibition in churches and produced under religious auspices. The introduction f the voice of Christ could not necessarily be ruled out, provided the words were those used in the Gospels.
