GORE BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST EVENING’S MEETING

At last evening’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) presided over Councillors J. A. Baldey, W. K. Hamilton, R. L. Reid, N. Robson, T. Sim, F. S. Graham, A. McLachlan, G. C. Hamilton and R. S. G reen - . „ TV-1. The secretary of the Gore High School Board of Governors (Mr F. Young) wrote about the council s claim of June 1936 for payment of £6O for the supply of water to the hostels ana the school, for 1936-37. The board did not consider the claim reasonable, but was prepared to pay the council £6O for the charges to the end of the current year, March 31, 1938, and to undertake to pay £2O a year for the water supply thereafter. After some discussion it was decided to refer the matter back to the Water Committee for consideration and report. The secretary of the Southland Progress League (Mr J. S. Dick), wrote enclosing a reply received from the Minister of Aviation (the Hon. F. Jones) to the league’s representations for Gore to be a stopping place on the proposed Dunedin-Invercargill air service. The reply read: “You will appreciate the fact that the question of stopping places for the Dunedin-Invercar-gill air service will be governed by the availability of licensed and suitable aerodromes and the service required at the intermediate points. The representations of your league will, however, be considered when a decision is being made.”

The Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) wrote about the exclusion of streets from the 30 mile an hour restriction. He had noted the council’s views about the removing of the speed restriction at the northern end of the State highway. He did not consider that the existence of a speed limit would be of great value in providing for speed at the junction of the Boundary road. “I should be pleased to have the council’s views about my proposal to erect a cautionary sign warning motorists of this junction,” the letter concluded.

The Mayor said he would suggest that the council have no objections to the erecting of the cautionary sign, but that it object to the removal of the 30-mile-an hour restriction sign. It was decided to ’agree to the erection of the cautionary sign, and to ask permission to convey the council’s objections about the removal of the restriction sign to the Minister. The report of the works committee recommended that the parking area on the north side of Irk street be altered to parallel parking, and that Main street, from Medway street to Lyne street, east side, be set aside as a parking area. The recommendation was adopted. RIFLE SHOOTING The members of the Gore Defence Rifle Club fired a competition for a trophy presented by Mrs Knibbs (McNab). Some of the riflemen shot well, especially H. Windle and P. R. Mallon, who compiled 94 and 93 respectively, off the rifle. The trophy was won by P. R. Mallon, who reached the handicap limit of 95, with two points handicap. H. Windle reached the same total with one point handicap, but was barred through having won a trophy two Saturdays ago. The Matthews button for top score off the rifle was won by H.' Windle. The range prizes were won by P. Hay, at 500 yards with a 48, including one point handicap, and at 600 yards, by H.
