Mrs H. A. Williams, Louisa street, and her son, John, leave tomorrow morning for an extended holiday to Marlborough.

Miss Mary Allan arrived from Wellington by the Maunganui yesterday and is staying with her grandmother, Mrs Donald Macdonald, Edendale. Mr and Mrs I. Copeland, Otatara, entertained a number of friends at their home on Saturday evening to celebrate the 21st birthday of their son, Leslie. The Dowager Duchess of Norfolk and her daughter, Lady Winifride Howard, who have been staying at Government House, Wellington, are at present in Christchurch, where they are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Tomorrow they will go to “Ugbrooke, ■ Marlborough, to visit Mrs H. D. Vavasour, whose late husband was a first cousin of the Duchess.

Mrs Roy Bamsdale, Lewis street, and Mrs A. C. Smart, Thomson street, were joint hostesses at tea on a recent afternoon at the former s home in honour of Miss Gwen Nairn, who is shortly to be married. Among those present were Mesdames W. R. Nairn, H. White-

The wedding took place in England on November 6 of Miss Christine Ethel Parr, youngest daughter of Sir James Parr, G.C.M.G., of Auckland, and the late Lady Parr, to Lieutenant William Geoffrey Hornby, R.N. Sir James Parr was formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, and after the death of Lady Parr his daughter played a prominent part acting as hostess for him. The bridegroom is the son of the Rev. W. Hornby, vicar of Santon, Isle of Man, and Mrs Hornby, and grandson of the late well-known Dr J. J. Hornby, Provost of Eton. The ceremony was performed by Canon W. G. Elnor, in the restored Norman church of St. Mary the Virgin, Dover, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The south peak of Mount Cook was climbed on Monday of last week by Miss Marion Scott, Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs Vic Williams and Guides Vic Williams and Harry Ayres. The party left the Gardiner Hut at 4.30 a.m.,

and reached the summit at 11.40 a.m., arriving back at the hut at 6.45 p.m. The route taken was up the western snowface and the rock ridge. The conditions were excellent and splendid views were obtained; Mount Aspiring more than 100 miles away was clearly seen. Miss Scott before climbing Mount Cook made the ascent of Augille Rouge from the Malte Brun Hut. She has been climbing for a number of years and has a considerable number of peaks to her credit. Mount Cook is her major effort.
