CITY GUARDS CLUB COMPETITION MATCHES On Saturday afternoon the City Guards Defence Rifle Club fired the first stage of the Whitcomb and Caldwell Cup competition, 10 shots being fired at 300, 500 and 600 yards. A handicap trophy competition for B grade members was fired in conjunction with the shoot. The conditions were favourable and some good scoring resulted. At 300 yards J. Buttolph, with a five-bull finish headed the list, his card reading: 554545555 5—48. B. Broomfield with 555455553 5 —47 was second. G. Nicol, with 5554 5 5 5 5 5 5—49 and Broomfield 55555455 5 5 —49 just missed the possible at 500 yards, Nicol, with a six-bull finish, filling first place. J. Brydon, who made a good eight-bull finish in a score of 48, was third, his score reading; 4 4 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5—48. At 600 yards Nicol with 555445545 5—47 was top, Buttolph 45, G. Moreton 45, R. Adams 45 and W. McChesney 45 filling the next places. The best aggregates, for the day were obtained by Nicol, 44, 49, 47—140; Buttolph, 48, 47, 45—140, and Broomfield, 47, 49, 44—140. Nicol took first place with the highest score at the longest range. . . The B grade competition resulted in a close finish. J. Brydon 137, C. E. Young 137 and B. Walker 137 tied for first place, Brydone winning on the count back at the longest range. The aggregates were: Brydone 554, Young 554, Walker 553. Brydon, Young and Walker are first-year shots and their 133, 130, 133 off the rifle were good efforts. Following are the results: —

Next Saturday a handicap competition for three Christmas trophies will be fired, and the Whitcomb and Caldwell Cup competitions will be completed, will be completed.

INVERCARGILL DEFENCE CLUB PARAWA CUP COMPETITION The final stage of the Parawa Cup competition was fired at Otatara on Saturday afternoon in fine weather. Ten shots each were fired at 300, 500 and 600 yards. The scoring all round was excellent, the top men showing brilliant form. S. L. Wall had the best aggregate, 144, closely followed by A. R. Wills with 143. A. Ford, who made his first appearance of the season, was next with 141. F. G. Henderson and J. Clark also scored well, making 140 each. Henderson, who made a fine 49 at 600 yards, was the winner of the cup after counting out Mrs J. B. Doake, who put up a splendid performance for a woman by scoring 48 at 600 yards. Her aggregate of 137 beat a number of the club’s A grade shots. At 300 yards, N. Mac Williams topped the list with 49, just missing the possible on his last shot. His card read: 5 5 5 5 5 5555 4_49. Clark, Wall, W. Milley and R. M. Milley with 48 each also shot well. At 500 yards Ford with 5 5 5 5 4 5 5 5 5 5—49 counted out Wills with 555555555 4—49 for pride of place. W. Milley and G. Wilson with 48 each also shot excellently. At 600 yards Wall with 545555555 5 49 counted out Henderson, who also made 49, as follows: 554555555 5. Mrs Doake and Ford with 48 each also did well.
