ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW

WOMEN’S CLUB GARDEN

CIRCLE

The annual flower and vegetable show organized by the Garden Circle of the Southland Women’s Club »s looked forward to as one of the mam activities of the club, and the show yesterday afternoon in the club r 9°™ s was one of the most successful yet held. The proceeds from the sale of blooms at the end of the show will be devoted to one of the chief interests of the circle—the railway stations of Southland. Miss Olive Rein’s trophy for the most points was won by Mrs J. W. McArthur, and was presented to her by the chairwoman of the circle, Mrs J. GMacdonald. Mrs McArthur had 14 points, Mrs A. E. H. Bath was second with 10, and Mrs A. C. Dickens ana L. C. Smith were equal third with nine points. JUDGES’ COMMENTS The cut bloom and vegetable and fruit sections were judged by Mr B. P. Mansfield, superintendent of reserves. He said that the general standard of exhibits was as good as any he had seen at a similar show anywhere in the province. The last few days had been hot and dry, and naturally such things as roses would burst into bloom very quickly and growers holding blooms for the show would be disappointed. That would account for the rather thin rose entry. The first prize entry in the fruit and vegetable section was quite outstanding. It was well arranged and the quality of the material was good—it was a question whether it could be superseded anywhere in the district.' A collection of native plants, exhibited by Mrs J. G. Macdonald, was specially mentioned by Mr Mansfield. He considered it a feature which might well be introduced into every horticultural show in the district, and congratulated the circle on including it in the schedule.

Mrs D. R. Curzon, who judged the decorative section said that the blooms were outstandingly good, and the work was of a high standard. Fine taste was shown in the arrangement of the mixed bowls, and the posies and dress sprays were artistically made.
