The Argentine Government has issued a decree prohibiting the export of wheat and flour. A further notice to the Minister of War simultaneously ordered all the Army’s baking equipment to be concentrated at Buenos Aires. Similarly the national penitentiary’s bakeries will be ready to operate at full capacity to supply bread to the public. These steps were taken as a result of the refusal of 250 of the city’s principal bakeries to reduce the price of bread and again to increase the size of a loaf. The bakeries claim that the price of flour is excessive. A conference of bakers and millers was futile. However, the millers are agreeing to supply the Government flour at under market price. The distribution of bread has long been a serious social and economic problem, and a strong public demand persisted for a Government solution of The embargo is expected to last a month.
