STRONG BATTING BY UTTLEY

DROPPED TWICE BY FIELDSMEN MARIST OPENS INNINGS Union, playing against Marist on the High School ground, made 316 in the first innings, Uttley partnering every member of the team for a total of 170 runs. The first hundred was reached after an hour and a-half of play, Uttley being 54 at that stage. He gave two chances, being missed by Ryan in the slips at 57, and N. Ford missed him some time before that. They would, however, have been pretty good catches had they been held. Ellis established a useful partnership with Uttley, which was productive of 120 runs, and Poole batted vigorously for 36, but only one other player after that managed to reach double figures. Uttley was sending the ball all round the field, and when the innings was closed he had hit three 6’s and 24 4’s. Marist’s fielding was patchy, but considering that the team was in the field for four hours it put up a good showing. Derbie, who took four wickets for 76, bowled 18 overs and kept his length and direction throughout. The wind, however, made bowling difficult. Marist has five or six medium pace lefthanders and bowling into the wind made them slower than usual. McGowan, who is recovering from an accident, was able to make an appearance and bowled eight overs. Marist went in at six o’clock and played for half an hour, by which time Brittenden’s wicket had fallen for five. Details: UNION First Innings C. Brew c Fraser b Derbie 14 L. M. Uttley not out 170 A.
