GOOD START FOR SENIOR GAMES

Two Batsmen Score Centuries SUCCESS OF SPENCE AND UTTLEY UNION SIDE COMPILES BIG TOTAL Senior cricket made a promising beginning in Invercargill on Saturday a century being scored by an opening batsman in each of two matches. Playing his first game for Union against Marist on the High School ground L. M. Uttley carried his bat for 170, and W. Spence playing for Appleby against Invercargill at Biggar street, made 102, and was last man out. Union made 316 in its first innings against Marist, which has lost one wicket for 17, and Appleby is in a strong position also, having made 231 in its first innings, while Invercargill has lost eight wickets for 61, indicating a follow on. The grounds were in good order and the games were played in fine weather, with a gusty westerly wind that added to the bowlers’ difficulties. A feature of the play was the introduction of the eight ball over. APPLEBY IN STRONG POSITION USEFUL SCORES AT EACH END OF INNINGS Appleby’s innings was weighted with useful scores at each end, with a Pronounced sagging in the middle. The opening partnership between Milne and Spence was productive of 52 runs, Milne being caught by Sharp off Service at 40 after half an hour s . playSievwright was dismissed 12 minutes later after just reaching double figures and Cliff Shirley, Calvert and McKenzie were sent back to the pavilion in quick succession without adding materially to the score. The other Shirley was going well and made a useful 16 until he fell to a yorker from Roberts and was followed by Riddell and Purdue. At this stage the tail began to wag and Johnston, making a ninth wicket partnership with Spence, added another 15 runs in 19 minutes. Spence was batting away steadily all this time, playing cautiously and giving no chances at all Foster, the last man, came in at three minutes past four, when the score stood at 165. Spence still needed about 40 runs to make his century and the chances at this stage appeared fairly remote. Foster, however, rose to the occasion admirably, and as far as possible left the bowling to his partner, finding time, nevertheless, to score a useful 25 in the next hour. The scoring slowed up yfhen Spence had reached 98. A maiden over was bowled, and then Foster faced the bowling for the beginning of the next over. The first ball he hit for a single, and the next Spence hit for a 4, bringing his score to 102. He survived only two more balls and was then bowled by Roberts, the innings closing at five o’clock. Spence was at the wicket for three hours, the life of the innings. Pollok, who opened the batting for Invercargill with Joel, was bowled by McKenzie with the sixth ball of the first over. Joel also fell to McKenzie in the third over of the innings and the other six wickets were taken by J. Purdue, who sent Roberts back for a duck with the first ball of his third over, which was a maiden. His next over cost only two runs and in his fifth he narrowly missed the hat trick, taking one wicket with his third ball and one each with his sixth and seventh. Haworth, who was still batting when stumps were drawn, and Sharp were the only Invercargill batsmen to reach double figures. Roberts was Invercargill’s most effective bowler, taking three wickets for 21.' Details:— APPLEBY First Innings. J. Milne c Sharp b Service 40 W. Spence b Roberts 102 I.
