MALE ASSISTANTS IN SHOPS

NEW AUSTRALIAN AWARD (Received September 17, 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 17. The Industrial Commission, in a tentative award covering shop assistants, provides that male rates of wages are to be paid to asistants employed in any shop, department or section of a shop selling groceries, male clothing, hardware, furniture, manchester goods, wireless sets and equipment, motor accessories and cooked provisions. The employer may employ all female assistants in the sale of women’s garments, baby ware, fancy goods, toys, cakes and flowers. In other departments, except in small shops, not less than 50 per cent, of the shop assistants shall be males.
