BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

GRANT NOT THOUGHT SUFFICIENT DECISION TO APPROACH MINISTERS Stating that the Government’s grant of £2O to the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs’ Association was insufficient considering the importance of the work done by the association, Mr D. Marshall, at a meeting of the directorate of the Southland A. and P. Society yesterday, said the meeting should give an expression of opinion •on this question. It was decided after a brief discussion that the matter should be referred to the Minister of Agriculture (t'-.e Hon. W. Lee Martin) and to the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser). . . „ On the motion of Mr J. Carnegy Gardner, it was decided that a grant of £lO should be made to the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs’ Association. Mr Gardner said the association had very little funds and was deserving of support. “I quite agree,” said Mr Marshall, "and I wish to state that the sum of £2O the association receives from the Government is not enough for the importance of the job the association is doing. We should give an expression of opinion on this point.” After other members had expressed agreement with Mr Marshall’s remarks, it was decided that letters be written to the Minister of Agriculture and to the Minister of Education stating that because the association had been transferred from the control of the Department of Agriculture to the Education Department attention should be directed to its increased activities and that the advisability of giving it an increased subsidy should be considered.
