NIGHTCAPS

TOWN BOARD MONTHLY MEETING Those present at the monthly meeting of the Nightcaps Town Board were Commissioners W. Excell (chairman), E. Mason, J. C. Wilson, F. Klemick, R. Rushton, T. Thomson and F. Boyle. The clerk having advised property owners adjacent to the Morley Village ditch which a resident said was a menace to public health, that hedge clippings required clearing, Commissioner Thomson asked if the position was as stated. The chairman: I went up the morning after the last board meeting and the ditch was then full of hedge clippings. He said he had had to stand considerable abuse about this matter. However, the clippings had been cleaned out and the ditch had been attended to by the board’s surfaceman. The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board, Wellington, advised being in receipt of plans for the proposed hall alterations and extensions and specifications for the tar-sealing of main highways in the Nightcaps town district. The applications were being placed before the Loans Board and the Town Board would be advised of its decision at an early date. The Health Department advised that it was proposed to endeavour to recover by the most equitable system two-thirds of the cost of services of health inspectors to town boards and boroughs. It was considered that this cost would amount per capita, to 4gd in counties and 7d in town board districts and boroughs. The quota of Nightcaps (612) would amount to £l7 17/-, an increase on the present charge of over £4.

The board decided to support the proposal. Cr Thomson inquired if it was not possible to take advantage of the Government subsidy of £4 a week to workers, and tar-seal some of the board’s footpaths. He also added that it was peculiar that some of the back street footpaths had been gravelled and the main street ones left ungravelled. The chairman said the board was still waiting on the gravel contractor for supplies, and the contractor would be interviewed with a view to expediting the work. There was a lengthy discussion about the retention or otherwise of the new wide range picture apparatus at present on trial by the board. It would appear that there is some difference of opinion as to whether the apparatus was an improvement or not but the board finally resolved to purchase the equipment.
