CASTOR OIL FOR PIGS
PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE Prevention is better than cure at any time, but despite all one’s endeavours in keeping stock well housed, well fed, and in sanitary surroundings, a variety of ills is always ready to attack even the most healthy pig. Treated at the commencement any trouble is more likely to yield to treatment than if allowed to get a firm hold of the victim. Where pigs are concerned the correct remedy for a particular ill should always be ready to hand, as there is danger of neglect. Castor oil is the great standby in many pig disorders, so it is advisable to have a large bottle always ready for immediate use. The commoner grade will answer all ordinary purposes just as well as the more expensive, highly refined type, and it will usually be found cheaper to buy this in bulk at some veterinary chemists. By the way, dosing a pig with castor oil, or any other medicine for that matter, is a risky undertaking unless care is exercised to prevent the hands of the attendant coming into contact with the teeth of the animal; serious cases of blood poisoning have been contracted in this way. An old leather boot with a hole cut in the toe forms a safe method of injecting fluid medicine into an animal, and all risk is entirely eliminated.
