PULPY KIDNEY IN LAMBS

VACCINATION IN AUSTRALIA Entero-toxsemia affects mainly young lambs up to the age of 16 weeks which are on good feed and in good condition, states The Australasian. However, cases occasionally occur in aged or store sheep. Sheep or lambs which develop the disease usually die suddenly and are found dead in the camp in the morning, or may lie down quietly and die in the paddock during the daytime without atrracting attention. On some properties last lambing season the incidence of the disease was high, although on properties where the lambs were vaccinated and other control measures were adopted the mortality was very low. Recently a comprehensive survey of a large number of properties on which cases of the disease have occurred was carried out by officers of the live stock division of the Department of Agriculture, and, as a result, it has been definitely established that the disease may be controlled and the mortality reduced to a minimum if the lambs are vaccinated and a supply of meadow hay is available at all times. To be effective vaccination should be carried out at an early age, the first dose being given when the lambs are two to three weeks old and the second after an interval of from three to four weeks. The vaccine is prepared by the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, Parkville, from which supplies may be obtained.

Pamphlets on the disease and on the correct method of vaccination of sheep may be obtained free of charge on application to the Department of Agriculture, Melbourne, C.2.
