OLD STUDENTS REUNION

Southland Boys’ High School BIG ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL FUNCTION Major D. F. Leckie and Sergeant R_ Lepper, two of the three Southland members of the New Zealand Coronation contingent, were guests of honour at the annual reunion of the Southland Boys’ High School Old Boys’ Association last evening. They gave addresses, describing the scenes in London during the Coronation celebrations, and told several interesting stories about sidelights of the trip. There was a big attendance of members and representatives of kindred associations. Mr E. H. Smith, the newly-elected president of the association, was chairman. Mr T. D. Pearce, a former rector of the school, was also present. . Community singing was led during the evening by Mr D. Collie, who played the piano-accordion. Old school songs were interspersed with modern favourites. , , „ Proposing the toast of “The School, Mr E. H. Preston said the school always formed a bond in later life for those who had once been its pupils. Friendships were made _at school which were much more binding than those made in after-life. It was in that light that he wished to propose the toast of “The School.” SUCCESS IN SPORT Mr J. L. Cameron, who replied in the unavoidable absence of the rector. Dr G. H. Uttley, said the school had won five out of six inter-school Rugby football matches and in hockey had beaten Otago. Debating was anew departure in the school’s activities and in this, too, it had achieved success. Debating work, which was based on the very sound foundation of public speaking, formed a valuable part of the school’s life. The library, also, played a big and important part in the school’s activities. Mr I. O. Manson proposed the toast of “The Guests,” representatives of kindred associations and performers, emphasizing the interest that had been taken in the addresses given by Major Leckie and Sergeant Lepper. / Major Leckie replied on behalf of the guests, Mr Collie for the performers, Mr E. Sutton for the Southland Technical College Old Students’ Association, and Mr G. Meffin for the Marist High School Old Boys’ Association. ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION -YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED The annual meeting of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association was held last evening. Mr J. L. Cameron, the retiring president, was chairman. There was a big attendance of members. The steady growth of the association was referred to by Mr Cameron in formally moving the adoption of the annual report (already published) and balance-sheet. He discussed the report and said the association was in a strong financial position. The Macalister Bay in the school library had been formally handed over to the school that week and already contained the nucleus of a very fine collection of books, Mr Cameron added. He wished to thank Mr Eustace Russell for formally presenting the bay to the school. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
