REVOCATION OF HIGHWAY

DIPTON-CASTLEROCK ROAD OBJECTION SUPPORTED BY LEAGUE Further discussion on the revocation of the Dipton-Castlerock road as a main highway took place at last nights meeting of the executive, of the Southland Progress League when a letter was received from the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union advising that it had been in communication with the Minister of Public Works and the Transport Board about the revocation of the road as a main highway. The position was, the letter added, that when the Dipton-Lumsden road was completed it was proclaimed a main highway and the Dipton-Castlerock portion was revoked. The executive had objected to this stating that it was a mistake, because of the large volume of through traffic which used that portion of the road and would continue to use it, as it was the main direct route to the lakes district, Te Anau, Eglinton, and so on. „ The Southland and Wallace County Councils had both objected to the action of the department, but so far without avail. The executive now solicited the support of the Southland Progress League and Automobile Association and the Chamber of Commerce and asked that the three bodies consider the matter with a view to cooperating in any further action which might be taken. As it was one which vitally affected both the Southland and Wallace counties, the executive had suggested to them that they la “ dicate what further action could be Mr John Miller, who presided, said that there was some merit in the case before them. Mr D. J. Wesney said the new road was far too narrow and there had been several accidents on it. It was stated that the Dipton-Castle-rock road was being retained as a main highway till June 30, 1938, when the position would be reviewed. Mr W. G. Tait said there was no question that the old road would be better as a highway. He moved that the league support the counties in their request. The motion was carried.
