OBITUARY

MR G. E. ROBERTSON

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, September 16.

A well-known Wellington citizen, Mr George Edmund Robertson, J.P., Consul for Brazil, died suddenly today at the age of 84 years. He dropped dead in Molesworth street on his way home. He founded the Garibaldi Club in Wellington, which is still a popular rendezvous of Italian residents and friends. His assistance to the Italian community brought him a letter of appreciation from the Italian premier at the time. Shortly afterwards, his services were recognized by the late King Umberto who conferred on him the distinction of the Chevalier of the Order of the Crown of Italy. With the approval of Mr R. J. Seddon, then Prime Minister, he contributed regular articles to foreign newspapers. He was a prominent Freemason. He leaves two sons, Roland and Cecil, and a daughter, Mrs Jack (Nelson).
