RIVERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION DISPLAY Some 200 people assembled in Fleck’s hall recently for the purpose of viewing a display by the Riverton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union of needlework, woolwork and decorative art. A feature of the exhibition was the beautiful display of narcissi staged by Mr N. Carter, of Invercargill. The Mayor (Dr. N. G. Trotter) in formally declaring the function open, paid tribute to the ability and enthusiastic spirit of the women responsible for exhibiting such a wonderful display of varied articles. BADMINTON CLUB The Riverton badminton players and their friends held a social evening in the Empire Theatre to mark the closing of one of the most successful seasons of the club. There were 30 present. During the evening competitions and games were held. During the supper interval, Mr M. P. Lyng, president of the club, thanked the women who had ably assisted the .club to create a social atmosphere throughout its activities, by bringing refreshments. He also praised the work of the finance committee of the club. The members of this committee were responsible, he said, for the maintenance of the club’s sound financial position. FAREWELL Mr A. Evans was the guest of the Riverton Bowling Club at a social function given in his honour before his departure from Riverton. Mr B. Richards, vice-president of the club, made a presentation of a handsome bowler’s leather bowl-case to Mr Evans as a mark of appreciation of his services to the club during his many years’ association with its members. Mr Richards spoke in complimentary terms of Mr Evans’s playing ability and sense of true sportsmanship which had been an example to. other players. In conclusion Mr Richards expressed the hope that both Mr and Mrs Evans would experience many years of happiness through the fellowship of other bowlers in Invercargill. Mr W. Ashley also spoke in appreciative terms of the sportsmanlike way in which the guest conducted himself during a game of bowls. Mr F. L. Girvan stated that during his term as president of the club, Mr Evans had given him helpful, advice which he had very much appreciated. Several other members also spoke of the enthusiastic endeavour of Mr Evans to advance the club. Mr Evans replied. PRESENTATION Before his departure from Riverton Mr A. McPhail, of> the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, was entertained by members of the Riverton Golf Club and presented with a fountain pen. The president, Mr J. A. C. Mackenzie, ref.Vred to the excellent work of the guest both as a member and executive officer of the club.
