FAIR RENTS ACT

INTERESTING INFORMATION GIVEN (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 16. Interesting information about the Fair Rents Act and also about the collection of arrears in wages on behalf of workers was given by the acting Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) in an interview today. Mr Webb gave the following summary, indicating the extent to which tenants had availed themselves of the services of the Labour Department about proceedings under the Act:— Total number of applications received 3133; agreements as to rent payable and approved by inspection 832; cases taken to court and rent reduced 146; rent justified 146; tenants represented by an inspector in eviction proceedings 145; other cases 1902. For underpaid workers the total amount of arrears in wages collected and disbursed to workers by the department, or paid directly to workers, was £70,720.
