WOODVILLE SCHOOL

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS (United Press Association) , ■ WOODVILLE, September 16. Over 1000 people attended the beginning of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the school this afternoon and the assemblage would have been greater if the proceedings had not been affected by intermittent rain. Former teachers present included the Jtev. A. Stevenson, Lower Hutt (head master 1892-1920), Mrs S. Murphy, Woodville (first mistress) and Mrs James Beagley, Hamilton.

The Mayor (Mr H. P. Horne), himself one of the oldest pupils, and Mr R. R. Johnston (chairman of the committee), welcomed the visitors. A brief address was given by the Rev. Stevenson, who paid a tribute to Mr Horne, who had carried out the mayoral duties so long, showing the trust placed in him by the townspeople. During the afternoon a portrait of the first master, Mr W. G. Crawford, was unveiled by Mrs Murphy, who lit the candle on the jubilee cake
