THAMES-COROMANDEL ROAD

ENGINEERS PUZZLED OVER REASON FOR SUH’S (Special to The Times) AUCKLAND. September 15. The reason for the large number of slips recently on the Thames-Coro-mandel Road is proving somewhat of a puzzle to Public Works engineers for land in many places that had shown no tendency to slips and the formation of which did not suggest any danger has moved forward.

Two theories are expressed, each of which, however, may be related as the cause. One is that a slight quake occurred in the district and the other is that there was a shrinkage of land during an abnormally dry spell and that when the rain came on heavily the quick absorbing of water brought on slips.
